A Rundown of This Year’s Ski Week

A contribution from Eva Feinberg, class 6

Every school year there is a week where all students have the opportunity to go skiing or snowboarding (skiboarding) at Blue Hills. Throughout the week, elementary- and middle schoolers skiboarded with an instructor, but on Fridays, students skiboarded with a parent or with a fellow student. High school students were allowed to skiboard independently, and this year on Thursday, they had the opportunity to go to Wachusetts for the day.

On the first day we prepared ourselves for the week. Elementary- and middle schoolers took a small test down the bunny slope to get divided  into groups of difficulty: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. After that we went our separate ways and continued skiboarding. At 4:00 pm we got off the slopes and got ready for the busride back to GISB and arrived around 5:15pm where our parents were waiting for us.

On the second day, we were familiar with our coaches and our groups. We hit the slopes all happy and ready to touch the snow. We were all getting better at skiing and snowboarding. Again, the time came where we had to leave the mountain and head home to our families. On the 30-45 minute bus ride, we were all laughing, talking, and playing games.

Slowly everyone was improving their skills and techniques. We were able to play some games and learn new tricks and skills. By the time we were on the slopes, everybody was excited to skiboard. From Wednesday on the snow was slushy, which made skiboarding more challenging, but that didn’t stop us from having fun!

Thursday was the last day of skiboard school before we could skiboard on our own. The high schoolers went to Wachussettes for the day. They had a ton of fun exploring the mountain with each other because it was a more challenging mountain than Blue Hills. Elementary and middle school, on the other hand, stayed at Blue Hills. Once it was time to leave, we said goodbye to our teachers who taught us a lot over the course of the week.

Finally the day came: friday; the day we all got to skiboard without an instructor. We left school at around 9:30 am and got back at around 3:20 pm. We all had an amazing time. At around noon, students started to fill the dining hall with laughter, and bought food and drinks. The Konditormeister brought us treats, too, which was delicious as always. As we were skiboarding with our friends and parents, sadly the time came: we had to leave Blue Hills, head home to our parents, and say goodbye to another great ski week.
